1969 Pontiac GTO Convertible

Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1969 Pontiac GTO Convertible, a remarkably correct and well-documented car with service records and ownership history to new. Presented in its original colors of Liberty Blue over Ivory White, this is well-optioned example with power steering, power disc brakes and factory air conditioning. Correct to its original specification aside from a transmission swap from the original automatic to a more desirable four-speed manual. Numbers-matching 400 cubic inch V8.

The original California owner kept this car from his purchase in 1969 until his death in 2001; complete service records during his three-decade ownership plus the original owner's manual, protect-o-plate, window sticker, dealer invoice, loan documents and even a telegram to his family announcing the purchase are included with the sale. A second California owner kept the car for another ten years; the car was briefly in Texas before the current Atlanta owner's purchase in 2017.

Although this GTO was running, driving and most important, not rusty, the paint was tired and it had accrued some deferred maintenance needs after a few years of benign neglect. Over the last two years the current owner has spent tens of thousands of dollars on a comprehensive cosmetic and mechanical freshening. The result is a well-sorted and very nice driver that looks great and can be reliably enjoyed for years to come.

Highlights of recent service work include a full steering, suspension and brake system overhaul (new power steering pump, steering gearbox, rag joint, tie rod ends, all new bushings, repacked wheel bearings, ball joints and Bilstein shocks, new brake lines and hoses, master cylinder and booster plus a full brake job). The chassis feels great -- steering is tight, brakes stop the car confidently and there are no squeaks or rattles over bumps.

The original numbers-matching engine was removed and re-sealed, then fitted with ram-air high output exhaust manifolds, a new (but correct) Rochester carb and a new engine wiring harness (plus an aluminum radiator). A correct Muncie four-speed manual transmission with a Hurst shifter and all new linkages was professionally installed -- including the fully-functional reverse shift interlock in the steering column. The rear axle internals were renewed with 3.31 limited slip gears (better suited to the four speed). Stacks of receipts from Ames and other suppliers for this recent work also accompany the sale.

Cosmetically, the car did not need full restoration or rust repair, but was due for a freshening -- it has been repainted in the correct color; convertible top is a few years old but shows well with no damage (convertible power top mechanism was recently rebuilt and it works well). Glass rear window. Nice interior with new carpet, new four-speed center console and new OEM rally gauges. Original push-button AM/FM radio in dash plus hidden modern stereo (with controls in center console glove compartment). And it certainly presents underneath as a long-term California car, with original and rust-free floors and rockers.

A GTO convertible in great colors with a four-speed and a/c is certainly among the most desirable American cars from this era. Original purchase documents, window sticker, owner's manual, protect-o-plate, service records and PHS documentation accompany the sale.
