1973 Porsche 911 RSR

Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1973 Porsche 911 RSR tribute finished in Gulf-Porsche livery. This RSR was built to exacting standards in Italy using a longhood 1973 911T, and finished with many correct details that set it apart from the other builds and backdated cars on the market. A photo-documented build book details the process from the disassembled, glass-out tub being prepped through the finished product. This 911 was built as an homage to the Gulf Oil liveried 917K race cars, and of course to the 52 factory-produced 1973 RSRs. A well-known and admired car within Porsche circles and regularly seen at events such as Werks Reunion, it has been with the same Atlanta owner since he imported it in 2016.

This RSR is fitted with a 2.8 liter, MFI, twin-plug engine (7R case) built by Mittelmotor of Germany at a cost of over 29,000 Euros. Dyno tested to approximately 280hp when built, it's mated to a 915 gearbox with newer clutch kit and fitted with RSR headers and Dansk/RSR wide muffler. Recent compression and leak down numbers show 165-170 psi across all cylinders and leak numbers of four percent or less.

The owner has never tracked this car, but has enjoyed it for spirited driving and shows. He (and we) are impressed with how usable the power band is -- unlike many “hot” motors, you can lope around town at 2500 rpm all day long with plenty of torque and no drama. Or put your foot in it and you are treated to a glorious intake/exhaust note and gobs of power that comes on hard at high rpm -- this is the perfect engine for a car like this (see video).

Under the big-flared bodywork are 9x15 and 11x15 RSR-finished Fuchs-style wheels wearing nearly new and period correct Michelin TB5 tires. A front-mounted oil cooler is protected by a stainless-steel screen and the oil filter has been relocated with 993 hardware. Hood and fender mounted Cibie driving/fog lights are wired to proper dash mounted switches. Front aluminum S calipers with Padgid pads and Koni shocks, through-the-hood fuel filler and lightweight RSR tank. Inside, the FIA certified cage has a bolt-in front section which is currently removed but available. Other details include a 10k RPM tach, 300kph speedometer, double-wrapped 380mm steering wheel, lightweight seats and door cards, Lexan side windows with leather pulls and Sparco harnesses.

This RSR tribute impresses both in its finish quality and driving dynamics; it's certainly one of the most exciting early 911s we have driven but lacks the “actively trying to kill you” feel of the dedicated track cars we have experienced. A detailed build book along with import documentation, engine build invoice, dyno numbers, compression numbers and recent service records accompany the sale. Street legal and currently registered in Georgia -- ready for immediate street, motorsport or show use. Given the '73 tub and twin-plug MFI 2.8 it's as close to a real RSR as you can get without spending seven figures.
