1963 Mercedes-Benz 220SEb Fintail

Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1963 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE "Fintail" sedan, an incredibly well-documented example with only two owners and complete service history to new. Finished in correct black over red leather interior, paint and body present well with excellent grille, bumpers, trim and glass. Interior has recently been re-trimmed in leather at considerable expense. Very nice dash, wood, headliner, square-weave carpets, etc. This W111 is cleaner and better preserved than most, thanks to spending its life in dry climates (mostly in California and Idaho).

Odometer shows just over 49,000 miles. Based on its age and how the car presents (and drives), one would assume it has an actual mileage of 149k. But the service records show this car has accumulated a whopping 449,000 miles, nearly all them with the same owner from 1963 until his passing in 2017. When the original service book was full, he started another one -- and subsequently started a new book with each engine overhaul documenting the date, mileage and location of each service for more than 50 years. The service book entries date to new; a stack of paper records begin in the late 1980s and run through the present.

This Fintail has been meticulously maintained throughout its life and all of its systems (including the original Bosch mechanical fuel injection) are working properly. The 2.2 liter overhead cam inline six has been rebuilt twice, mostly recently 50k miles ago. It starts easily both hot and cold and runs smoothly across the rev range. The four-speed manual transmission feels great with no crunchy synchros and the column shift linkage works well with no binding. Driving dynamics, which echo the styling, are understated and refined.

Despite the high mileage, this car doesn't feel tired at all (we've seen plenty of examples with a fraction of the mileage that are shabby and worn out). It's a testament to how Mercedes-Benz build quality combined with a caring owner can keep a car like this on the road and still feeling fresh after nearly half a million miles.

The only deviations from stock are an under-dash A/C unit which is blowing cold and an AM/FM/cassette stereo. Recent service and tuning at Bud's Benz, Atlanta's vintage Mercedes specialist. This is a turn-key example with a fantastic history that's ready for its next owner to enjoy.
