1962 Ford Thunderbird Convertible

Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1962 Ford Thunderbird convertible showing 99,981 miles. A California black plate car until 2004 when it moved to Georgia, it shows to a "survivor" driver standard and is presented in its attractive and original color combination of corinthian white over pearl beige.

This T-Bird was sold new in Burbank, California, at Dave Grubbs Ford; registration cards indicate that it changed hands in 1965 and remained with the second owner for 39 years until our client's purchase 15 years ago. This is a highly-optioned example with power windows, power driver's seat, factory “SelectAire” air conditioning and rear wheel shields -- these accompany the standard features for 1962 which include the 390 Thunderbird V8 and swing-away steering wheel.

We believe the paint to be mostly original and have found no signs of corrosion or repair on the body panels or underside -- with the exception of some rust in the rear channel of the tonneau lid. New upholstery and carpet were installed in 2004. Service during the current ownership has included front-end work, shocks, mufflers, generator, starter, battery, distributor, coil, carburetor, valve stem seals, brake booster rebuild and more. Records indicate that the convertible top mechanisms were rebuilt in 2004.

This is a running and driving car but could benefit from some cosmetic and mechanical freshening. The convertible top is operating smoothly and correctly but the top itself is in need of replacement. The paint has a charming patina that comes from 57 years of use (a few spots could stand professional paint correction) and there are a few minor dents and dings about. The power windows, AM radio and power seat are working; the A/C is not. We have noted some fluid leaks, an exhaust leak, and although they remain in good condition, the tires are 14 years old. There may be some additional needs -- however, the current owner has driven the car regularly and spent a significant amount of money on service over the years.

A stack of old California registrations, the original California black plate, the original owner's manual, a partial build sheet (found when the seats were reupholstered), service records, another set of hub caps and “new in box” trunk interior trim panels are included with the sale. A rare, mostly original and unrestored California convertible offered at an attractive price point.
