1978 International Harvester Scout II

Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1978 International Scout II, a three-owner truck with 7,000 documented original miles. This is the lowest original-mileage Scout we've ever seen, and may be the lowest mileage example anywhere on the planet.

The original owner in Massachusetts ordered this truck with a snow plow to prepare for the winter of 1978-79, and for most of its life it saw use only as a snow plow, which kept the miles off. Despite its intended use as a work truck, it's very well optioned with a 304 cubic inch V8, automatic transmission, power steering, power disc brakes, deluxe interior and sliding rear quarter windows.

This Scout has seen a thorough but sympathetic restoration over the last few years, focused on a complete mechanical and cosmetic freshening while preserving as many original components as possible. The engine has been resealed and serviced with all new fluids and tune-up items; the transmission has been serviced; the brakes have been serviced (including new master cylinder); the suspension is completely rebuilt with new shocks and bushings; wheels and BF Goodrich 31x10.50 all-terrain tires are new. Both the underside and engine compartment are very nicely detailed and look factory fresh (and upon removing a valve cover, the engine itself is spotless inside -- just as you would expect given the low mileage). The truck runs and drives like new. Engine and transmission are smooth, steering is tight, brakes feel great.

Paint quality is excellent; lenses, glass, trim, grille, and bumpers are among the best we've seen. Floors and carpet have been replaced (this truck was used as a snow plow, after all) but the rest of the sheet metal is original. No known rust, filler, or previous accident damage. The interior, finished in Saddle and Tanbark, is easily the best original-condition example we have ever seen. Virtually no wear showing on the dash, steering wheels, door panels or seats. All gauges, lights and indicators are working, as is the factory AM radio.

Extensive documentation includes the original order form and dealer sales invoices, the original owner's manual, warranty book and service policy, the factory line setting ticket, the receipt from the Ziebart treatment in 1978 (which certainly saved the body panels from rusting away in those New England winters), a lengthy written history from the family of the original owner, plus registration and title records confirming the mileage.

The truck presents much as it did when it was new, aside from two upgrades for comfort and safety: a modern A/C system has been installed, and a roll bar has been fitted with three-point seat belts for both the front and rear seat occupants.
