1966 Porsche 912

Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this exceptionally correct and unmolested 1966 Porsche 912. This short wheelbase 912 non-sunroof coupe is a well-documented two-owner car with complete service records to new. Porsche COA confirms original numbers-matching engine and transmission. Originally sold by Bill Spreen Porsche in Atlanta to a local physician, the first owner cherished this car until his passing in 2020. A friend and collector client of ours in Asheville acquired it from the estate with our help two years ago. While the original owner maintained this car with an open checkbook throughout its life, it had not been driven regularly or serviced since 2018 due to his declining health (although it was always garaged). A thorough recommissioning under present ownership over the last two years has this 912 ready to be reliably enjoyed for many years to come.

Paint shows to a nice driver standard throughout; panels are straight, gaps are precise and the doors close with that characteristic Porsche ping. Original paint remains in the door jambs (we appreciate the lack of overspray and fully intact factory details present in these nooks and crannies). Date-correct (and believed original) steel wheels have been powder-coated, not painted, and are wearing new Vredestein Sprint Classics along with a matching spare. Excellent glass, lenses and trim. Nicely detailed underneath with new front pan and fresh suspension hardware.

Interior is quite tidy with older but very well preserved dash, steering wheel, door panels and headliner. Seats were reupholstered in correct leatherette more recently, and the square-weave carpets and charcoal coco mats are brand new. Correct Blaupunkt AM/FM/SW radio is working properly, as are all gauges, lights and indicators.

A Porsche Certificate of Authenticity from 1992 confirms correct colors along with a numbers matching engine and transmission. Records indicate a speedometer replacement in 1973 at 60k miles; thanks to complete and consecutive records before and after we believe the replacement odometer has rolled over once and thus the actual chassis mileage is 178k. Records also confirm a complete engine rebuild, clutch, pressure plate and resurfaced flywheel under the care of the first owner. A major engine-out service was just accomplished by the present owner to include a complete engine reseal, new pushrod tubes, carburetor rebuild (on the original Solex carbs), repainted engine tins, new heat exchangers and new exhaust.

Compression and leakdown were measured, and all four cylinders were above 140 psi and below 5 percent leakdown. The shop also noted oversize pistons and cylinders; we believe this is a 1720 cc build (and our seat of the pants assessment is that this 912 has a bit more punch than most).

The original type 901 dogleg five speed transmission was rebuilt; the shift linkage feels as it should and of course there are no crunchy synchros. New axles. New Koni shocks front and rear. Upgraded brake master cylinder to dual circuit. Thanks to such attentive and comprehensive service, this 912 feels particularly "dialed in" and fun to drive. It starts easily with smooth power delivery across the rev range and very engaging handling owing to the fresh suspension components and updated brakes.

This is a rare opportunity own an early three-gauge Karmann coupe offered for sale publicly for the first time since it was sold new in 1966. Original purchase documents, owner's books, factory tools and complete ownership and maintenance history to new are included with the sale.
