1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE. This W108 was sold new in late 1969 to a U.S. diplomat who took delivery in Stuttgart -- it remained with his family until our client's purchase last winter. Finished in the striking color combination of black over red interior, body is straight with nice paint and excellent glass and trim. Minor corrosion has started in the rockers but the car is otherwise solid. Michelin tires on factory wheels and hubcaps. The W108 has always been among our favorites, thanks especially to Paul Bracq's classic styling combined with the best build quality in the world.
The interior is completely original and still presents beautifully (indeed, MB Tex is virtually indestructible and if not abused will last for decades). Seats, door panels, carpets, steering wheel and headliner are all in excellent original condition. Dash padding, which remains crack-free, is a lovely shade of brown that looks great with the red interior. The interior wood and chrome have developed light patina but are eminently presentable. Four-band Becker Mexico stereo is working, as are all gauges, lights and climate sliders. A/C system is intact and turns on but does not blow cold.
Under the hood is a 2.8-liter fuel-injected overhead-cam inline six mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The Bosch mechanical fuel injection system is well tuned as this car starts easily hot or cold, and runs smoothly throughout the rev range. Major service in 2018 fewer than 2,000 miles ago included a transmission rebuild, flex disc, power steering pump, water pump, front and rear shocks, engine and transmission mounts, full tune up and a complete front-end rebuild including control arm bushings, tie rods, drag link and kingpins (the invoice for this work exceeded $16,000).
